Naveed Alam is a Philosopher’s stone who knows the art of transforming a common person into a Creative Writer. He knows how to tap your latent writing talents beautifully and skillfully even before you know about it. He is smart at analyzing you as a student and will teach you what exactly you need to move from one level to the other.
Google recorded about him:
“Naveed Alam received his BA in history and international studies from Macalester College, USA. After spending a post graduation year in Cairo, Egypt, he shifted his focus to literature and enrolled in the Creative Writing Program at the University of Oregon, USA.
Since receiving his MFA (Master of Fine Arts) degree in creative writing he has been teaching, writing, and traveling. He taught English composition, literature, and creative writing at the City University of New York (CUNY) for almost a decade. His first book, A Queen of No Ordinary Realms, received the Spokane Poetry Prize.
His work has been published in numerous literary journals in the USA including Prairie Schooner, American Poetry Journal, Poetry International, the Seattle Review, and International Poetry Review. …” (http://cel.umt.edu.pk/faculty/naveed-alam.html)
I came across Naveed as a Student in 2011 through a 3-month Creative Writing Workshop which was conducted by him as the Director of Center for English Language (CEL) at the University of Management and Technology (UMT). In Pakistan, it was a workshop of its own kind where he taught us how to write fiction using the modern writing techniques. All the writing program was based on the contemporary literature. By the end of the workshop, we found ourselves better at reading and writing skills both.
The amazing experience provided us with a whole new mind set to look at various matters and incidents happening around us and how to document them through short story, poetry and screen play. Then reading became fun and we learnt how to read between the lines. The Creative Writing Workshop was a boast and we, finally, ended up pursuing various writing endeavors and I came to blogging harboring the dream of earning my MFA Creative Writing one day!
It was the beginning of knowing ‘Naveed as a Teacher’.
Inside his firm and dynamic personality, hidden a loving, kind and passionate teacher. His handsome and smiling face, his refined, lively and inspirational personality, witty replies and soft tone, creative and analytical mind, empathic and friendly attitude, modern philosophy and contemporary teaching methodology will always keep you interested, attentive and active during his teaching sessions. And, you will feel motivated to present your best work. His step by step critique will every time push you to the next level unknowingly. By the end of the day, you are left with only one option and that is, “Just learn and grow!”
He teaches children, teenage, adults and older people with equal ease and competence. It is so because he loves his job and his students. With everyone, he comes up with a Promise and commitment. He makes sure you don’t leave him without learning what exactly he wants you to learn, provided you are serious at learning. His feedback will always be honest and direct but in kind and polite words. On each step, he guides his student what exactly he is supposed to do to produce better work. Alongside, he gives the student full opportunity to defend himself against his critique.
Money is not his concern, but your ability fascinates him. He won’t drop you out from his teaching sessions because you can’t pay full, half or anything because he wants to give an opportunity to the writer inside you.
Once you attend his classes, you won’t take time to fall in love with him. His passion for reading and writing is contagious! If you can prove yourself as a keen learner, he will go out of the way for you until you become an independent reader and writer.
